Ukraine 43 first setup
Ukraine ‘43 is a Mark Simonitch game which has been rewritten to use the current France ‘40 rule system. This benefits me as I’m already familiar with these rules. Unfortunately for me, all of the 4 scenarios require playing on both map sheets, which is larger than I have room for at home. Hence, setting up the game requires finding a 37” x 34” flat surface elsewhere.
Here’s what the Scenario 1 (and the Campaign scenario) look like set up and ready to play:

Most of those units are divisions, with a sprinkling of brigades here and there. That is a lot of men on the ground.
AS and DM were at EGO as well, and have an interest in playing Ukraine 43 in the future. I showed them how everything sets up on the OOB cards, then after it was set up to play. Then I played a couple of turns solo, until after 5, becoming too tired to focus on getting another turn knocked out before the EGO Wednesday game night (I would lose the table at that point).
From just these two turns, I suspect a good single map scenario could be constructed by requiring enough Russian units exiting the eastern map on its western edge to take one of the cities for victory points. This would demand the Germans to move enough armor up from the south to defend, which would weaken the south enough for the Russians to obtain victory points in that area.
