LotR 165 - Flies and Spiders (2)

"Flies and Spiders" again with the Misty Mountains Grim dwarf deck. This is probably not an especially good deck for the quest, but I've only played it once, and almost (sort of) won it, so I'm going to tune it as I go. The After Action report on that play indicated getting the treasure cards on Bilbo as fast as possible, and getting will power power boosting card into play to speed questing.

After a mulligan, the initial hand looks like:

  1. Forest Snare
  2. Erebor Record Keeper
  3. Heavy Stroke
  4. A Test of Will
  5. Orcrist
  6. Citadel Plate

Encounter: Fat Spider.

Round 1

  1. Resource: 4, draw Gondorian Spearman.
  2. Planning: Search the deck for Sting.
  3. Quest: Ori, Oin, draw Giant Web for net -1. Threat 28.
  4. Travel: Giant Web.
  5. Encounter: Fat Spider.
  6. Combat: Bilbo defends, discard Lazy Lob to put 3 hits on Fat Spider. shadow Dark Bats attach to Bilbo.
  7. Refresh: Threat 29.

Round 2

  1. Resource: 7, draw Gandalf.
  2. Planning: play Erebor Record Keeper, find and play Magic Ring. Orcrist on Gimli. Play Gandalf to destroy Fat Spider.
  3. Quest: Gandalf, Ori, Oin, Erebor Record Keeper, draw Fat Spider. Total Will is 5, net 0 but Great Web is cleared.
  4. Travel: none.
  5. Encounter: Fat Spider.
  6. Combat: Bilbo defends, draw Dark Bats for 2 hits on Fat Spider. shadow Fat Spider which poisons Bilbo resulting in +4 attack, Magic Ring cancels for Threat 32. Gimli swings for 2, another hit on Fat Spider.
  7. Refresh: Threat 33.

Dropping in Gandalf may have been a mistake here.

Round 3

  1. Resource: 4, draw Veteran Axehand.
  2. Planning: none.
  3. Quest: Ori, Oin, Erebor, draw Poisoned by Spiders, 1 hit to Bilbo. Net +5 on quest.
  4. Travel: none.
  5. Encounter: none.
  6. Combat: Bilbo defends, draw Hidden Path to deal 3 hits to Fat Spider, curtains for fatso.
  7. Refresh: Threat 34.

Round 4

  1. Resource: 8, draw Miner of the Iron Hills.
  2. Planning: Play Miner of the Iron Hills, discard Dark Bats. Play Veteran Axehand to soak up some damage.
  3. Quest: Ori, Oin, Bilbo, Erebor Record Keeper, draw Old Tomnoddy, clear Stage 1. Skip Stage 2 and go to Stage 3.
  4. Travel: none.
  5. Encounter: none.
  6. Combat: none.
  7. Refresh: Threat 35.

Round 5

  1. Resource: 3, draw Dwarven Tomb.
  2. Planning: Ready Gimli.
  3. Quest: nobody, draw Fighting Among Friends for no effect. Threat 37.
  4. Travel: none.
  5. Encounter: Wicked Spider.
  6. Combat: Bilbo defends, draw Caught in a Web from Sting for no effect, draw shadow Wicked Spider for 2 poison on Bilbo, exhaust Magic Ring to cancel damage, Threat 38. Gimli kills Wicked Spider.
  7. Refresh: Threat 39.

Round 6

  1. Resource: 3, draw Veteran Axehand.
  2. Planning: none.
  3. Quest: Ready Ori, draw Giant Web, Threat 41.
  4. Travel: Giant Web.
  5. Encounter: none.
  6. Combat: none, raise threat to get a resource, Threat 42.
  7. Refresh: Threat 43.

Forgot the spider at the quest stage.

Round 7

  1. Resource: 5, draw Galadhrim's Greetings and Forest Snare
  2. Planning: Pay to ready Oin.
  3. Quest: Ori, Oin, spider Wicked Spider, draw Forest Stream for net 0.
  4. Travel: none.
  5. Encounter: Wicked Spider.
  6. Combat: Bilbo defends, Sting damage 2 from Crazy Cob, exhaust Magic Ring for Threat 44, Gimli kills Wicker Spider.
  7. Refresh: Threat 44.

Going to threat out for sure, but let's see what it looks like.

Round 8

  1. Resource: 7, draw Citadel Plate and A Test of Will.
  2. Planning: Veteran Axehand.
  3. Quest: Ori, Oin, find spider Crazy Cob, draw Weighed Down, which results in Threat 47.

There's no way I'm going to beat this, time to scoop it.

AAR

Potential swaps:

  • Burglar Baggins for Gondorian Spearman. I need the will power.
  • Fast Hitch for Forest Snare.
  • Burning Brand:
  • Boots from Erebor:

Other tips:

  • When playing single hand solo, Stage 2 and the staging area encounter cards are discarded, and the player advances to Stage 3 directly.

  • Bilbo needs to be seriously buffed with Will and Resource before clearing Stage 1. There needs to be a nice swarm of of allies out as well, even if they're initially unconcious.
