I persist in thinking The Deeds of Dwarves will somehow be up to the task of beating Into the Pit. And it should be, especially if I play the scenario correctly and use the Cave Torch appropriately.

  3. Quest: Thalin, Dwalin, draw Goblin Follower, bummer. Raise Threat by 5 to get rid of Zigil Mineshaft, 4 P on East-Gate. Threat 34.
  4. Travel: none.
  5. Encounter: Goblin Follower.
  6. Combat: Dain defends, draw Signs of Conflict, Raise Threat to 36.
  7. Refresh: Threat 37.

Round 2

  1. Resource: 6, draw Narvi's Belt.
  2. Planning: play Narvi's Belt on Dain, Unexpected Courage on Dwalin.
  3. Quest: Thalin and Dwalin, draw Watchful Eyes, place on Dain. East-Gate is cleared, 1 P on Entering the Mines.
  4. Travel: First Hall, Threat 40.
  5. Encounter: none.
  6. Combat: Play Feint on Goblin Follower, Dwalin readies and kills Goblin Follower with Khazad! Khazad!. Threat 39.
  7. Refresh: Threat 40.

  3. Quest: Thalin, Dwalin and Veteran Axehand, draw Cave In and remove single Progress from quest. No big deal. Net progress 5, clear First Hall and 3 P on quest.

  5. Encounter: none.
  6. Combat: none
  7. Refresh: Threat 41.

Round 4

  1. Resource: 7, draw Zigil Miner.
  2. Planning: Play Zigil Miner.
  3. Quest: Thalin, Dwalin, Zigil Miner, draw Watchful Eyes attach to Dwalin. 6 Progress on Quest.
  4. Travel: Bridge of Khazad Dum. As long as no Cave In draw, should be able to clear this and quest next round.
  5. Encounter: none.
  6. Combat: none. Ready Dwalin.
  7. Refresh: Threat 42.

Round 5

  1. Resource: 8, draw Protector of Lórien.
  2. Planning: Exhaust Zigil Miner and play Ancestral Knowledge on Bridge of Khazad Dum to remove it from the staging area. This also clears Entering the Mines. on Dain.
  3. Quest: Thalin, Dwalin, draw Goblin Swordsman. Bummer. Net 3 P on Goblin Patrol.
  4. Travel: none.
  5. Encounter: Patrol Leader and Goblin Swordsman.
  6. Combat: Dain undefended against Goblin Swordsman, draw shadow Goblin Scout for no effect, 3 hits on Dain. Veteran Axehand defends Patrol LEader, shadow Goblin Follower, Veteran Axehand is killed anyway. Dwalin readies.
  7. Refresh: Threat 43.

Round 6

  1. Resource: 10, draw Sneak Attack.
  2. Planning: none.
  3. Quest: Thalin for 2W, draw Zigil Mineshaft, Threat 45. This is going to be tough.
  4. Travel: Zigil Mineshaft.
  5. Encounter: engaged.
  6. Combat: Play Feint on Patrol Leader, play Durin's Song with Dwalin and Zigil Miner, discard top draw of Encounter deck for Goblin Swordsman, no damage to Patrol Leader. That's the game but I'm going to play it out to see what the next couple of cards look like. Won't take long. Dain defends Goblin Swordsman, draw Zigil Mineshaft shadow for no effect, draw Goblin Scout due to Watchful Eyes. Bummer.
  7. Refresh: Threat 46.

Round 7

  1. Resource: 12, draw Dwarrowdelf Axe, not helpful. Need more allies in this deck.
  2. Planning: none.
  3. Quest: none, draw Crumbling Ruin. Exhaust Zigil Miner and draw A Test of Will, which results in a discard for Zigil Miner. Threat 48.

AAR

I have not been playing Untroubled by Darkness. I don't know if it's just not helpful, or I haven't been paying enough attention to it. It would be good to have more dwarf characters in play to make it worthwhile, but this deck has had a lot of trouble getting the allies out.

I think it's pretty hard to do a pure dwarf deck with just progress cards. I may dig into the sagas to pilfer a few more dwarves. Otherwise will have to find non-dwarf allies.
