LotR 40 - The Dead Marshes (4)

Tags

Another attempt at The Dead Marshes using a known-winning, pre-built deck.

Initial hand:

  1. Dunedain Quest
  2. Gandalf
  3. Snowbourn Scout
  4. Dunedain Mark
  5. Steward of Gondor
  6. Secret Paths

Not bad, I'll go with it.

Initial Encounter card is The Lights of the Dead. I'm choosing to fail this Escape as I don't have enough cards on the table to protect myself from something nasty like a Hill Troll coming up.

Round 1

  1. Resource: 3, draw Rivendell Minstrel.
  2. Planning: play Steward of Gondor on Denethor, exhaust for 2 R on Denethor. Play Rivendell Minstrel put Song of Wisdom in hand.
  3. Quest: Aragorn, Theodred Rivendell Minstrel draw A Wisp of Pale Sheen, exhaust Denethor to reduce to 1 R on Gollum. Escape test, commit Aragorn, draw Despair, passed. There are now 2 R on Gollum and I'm not even out of the first round. Net +5 P.
  4. Travel: none.
  5. Encounter: none.
  6. Combat: none.
  7. Refresh: Threat 29.

Round 2

  1. Resource: 5, draw Strider's Path.
  2. Planning: play Snowbourn Scout. Scry with Denethor A Wisp of Pale Sheen, send it to the bottom.
  3. Quest: Aragorn, Theodred, draw Fens and Mires. Play Strider's Path and go there immediately. Net +3 P. Escape commit Aragorn and Rivendell Minstrel, draw A Wisp of Pale Sheen, which is another fail as it has Escape value of 4. Dang. Not getting a break in this game.
  4. Travel: none.
  5. Encounter: none.
  6. Combat: none.
  7. Refresh: Threat 30, Hill Troll territory.

Round 3

  1. Resource: 12, draw Protector of Lorien.
  2. Planning: play Protector of Lorien on Theodred, Dunedain Quest on Aragorn. Denethor scries Giant Marsh Worm, we'll take it. Play Gandalf and reduce threat to 25.
  3. Quest: Aragorn, Theodred, Gandalf, draw Giant Marsh Worm, clears Fens and Marshes and Stage 1. Escape commit Aragorn and Rivendell Minstrel, draw Giant Marsh Worm for Escape 2 and pass.
  4. Travel: none.
  5. Encounter: none.
  6. Combat: none.
  7. Refresh: Threat 26.

Round 4

  1. Resource: 11, draw Faramir.
  2. Planning: play Faramir. Scry Treacherous Fog, take it!
  3. Quest: Aragorn and Theodred for 4 Will, draw Treacherous Fog, net +3 on Stage 2, pay 1 R to ready Aragorn, clears Stage 2, I can bring 7 W to this Escape test…draw Impassable Bog, Wargs and Wolf Rider for total 2, and that's a win.

Dang.

I'm surprised I got through this so fast, and with such a low score. The Escape draw would have been some nasty surprises had I drawn them during "regular" play. Wolf Rider is a surge card.

Score:

  • Rounds: 30
  • Threat: 26
  • Heroes: 0
  • Damage: 0

Total: 56.

I've been adding up scores incorrectly. The rounds should be counted to the last full round played, and not to the current round in play if it wins.

AAR

Two things I would have done differently in this game:

  1. I pulled Song of Wisdom, but it would have been better to have pulled Song of Kings to play on Denethor, who just stacks up the Resources with that Steward of Gondor. I never played Song of Wisdom, there wasn't any need.
  2. Protector of Lorien should have gone on Aragorn, as he can ready to commit for an Escape check. While it worked out fine this game, I can see how it could matter a lot in another game.
