LotR 37 - The Dead Marshes (1)

Tags

First run at The Dead Marshes, playing with a Spirit/Tactics deck which is big on threat reduction and location control. I'm not expecting a lot from this first play.

Initial hand:

  1. Ancient Mathom
  2. Swift Strike
  3. Ancient Mathom
  4. Dwarven Axe
  5. The Galadhrim's Greetings
  6. Strength of Will

The initial setup requires playing a card from the Encounter deck, which is Nightfall, requiring an Escape check. Eowyn does the check, and The Brown Lands and Despair are drawn. Good deal. Sucks to lose that much quest power first turn. Probably would have been better to allow resource markers on Gollum.

Round 1

  1. Resource: 3, draw Gandalf.
  2. Planning: none.
  3. Quest: none, draw Fens and Mires. Threat 29.
  4. Travel: Fens and Mires, Gollum +1 R.
  5. Encounter: none.
  6. Combat: none.
  7. Refresh: Threat 30.

I made a big mistake right here: I could have cleared Fens and Marshes by playing Strength of Will to put 2 P on it, which would clear it.

Round 2

  1. Resource: 6, draw Elfhelm.
  2. Planning: none.
  3. Quest: Eowyn, draw Impassable bog, net +3 P on Quest.
  4. Travel: none, Impassable Bog requires 12(!) to pass.
  5. Encounter: none.
  6. Combat: none.
  7. Refresh: Threat 31.

Round 3

  1. Resource: 9, draw Winged Guardian.
  2. Planning: none.
  3. Quest: Eowyn, draw The Brown Lands. Bad. Threat 33.
  4. Travel: none.
  5. Encounter: none.
  6. Combat: none.
  7. Refresh: Threat 34.

Round 4

  1. Resource: 12, draw Lorien Guide.
  2. Planning: play Lorien Guide, Ancient Mathom.
  3. Quest: Eowyn, Lorien Guide, draw Hill Troll. Threat 36.
  4. Travel: none.
  5. Encounter: Hill Troll.
  6. Combat: Gimli defends, Shadow is Giant Marsh Worm, no effect, takes
  7. Refresh: Threat 35.

Round 5

  1. Resource: 11, draw Lorien Guide.
  2. Planning: play Lorien Guide. Dwarven Axe on Gimli. Gandalf to put 4 D on Hill Troll.
  3. Quest: Eowyn, Lorien Guide x 2, draw The Lights of the Dead. Eleanor cancels, draw Evil Storm and that's the game as Gimli is out with a Hill Troll engaged. I do not think this would be winnable at this point especially as I removed Landroval from the deck.

AAR

Not controlling Threat was the key to this loss, the initial blunder was not clearing Fens and Marshes with Strength of Will. That would have allowed The Brown Lands to become active and resolve.

I think for a mulligan, this deck should be consider Citadel Plate, Northern Tracker and Lorien Guide as key cards to have in the initial
