August in Ukraine, 1943

Played the Soviet Voronehz and Steppe Fronts in a 4 player game of Ukraine '43 this afternoon. We had 5 people playing as a 4 player game, with 2 (myself and SK) playing the Soviets, and 3 (CC, AS and DM) playing the Germans.

First, it should be noted that having SK and myself on the same side is probably not a great idea. CC is pretty good, but AS often allows himself to be defeated in detail, and DM had not ever played a historical war game before. Compounding any potential imbalance is having SK and myself playing the Soviets. As it turned out, for new players, the Soviets are (as usual in eastern front games) the easier side to play. Attrition rules!

We played Scenario #1, which is the setup for the campaign scenario, with victory conditions congruent with an expected German performance for the first 7 turns.
