HF4A 20 - My First Claim (7)
Tags
Time for a quick game or two of High Frontier, playing my usual-as=of-late homegrown "My First Claim" scenario. For this series of plays, I'm using the Rules as Printed in High Frontier 4 All, that is, the rules from the box. My First Claim derives from the CEO scenario defined in the Appendix. I'm playing this strictly, with no Module 0. The goal is not to "win," so much as to get a lot more familiar with the patent decks, the map, the events, and what is and is not feasible within a solar cycle.
Turn 1
- Operation: Research: Solar-pumped MHD Exciplex Laser robonaut
- Event: Anarchy
- Notes: Crew: Anonymous P2P (E), pay 3 for FINAO.

Turn 5
- Operation: Boost: Thruster
- Event: Budget Cuts
- Notes: Lose the Flywheel Compulsator.
- Starting Aqua: 2
- Net Δ Aqua: 0
- Ending Aqua: 2
Turn 6
- Operation: Research: Pulsed Inductive thruster
- Notes: This rocket is really heavy for this thruster. I'd like to get out into the Cere zone, but I need 4 burns, and just don't have it. However, if I time it right, I can get to the Karin Cluster with 2 burns during Venus Flyby. Then with a pivot and another burn I can get to the Vesta Family is the Karin is a bust. Let's try it. And plan on in-situ fueling regardless.
- Starting Aqua: 2
- Net Δ Aqua: -1
- Ending Aqua: 1
Turn 7
- Operation: Research: Free Electron Laser robonaut.
- Event: Inspiration
- Notes: I need 9 Aqua to both boost and fuel, and hope that I don't get caught by a pad explosion.
- Starting Aqua: 1
- Net Δ Aqua: -1
- Ending Aqua: 0
Turn 8
- Operation: Free Market: Free Electron Laser robonaut
- Notes: Get the monies.
- Starting Aqua: 0
- Net Δ Aqua: 3
- Ending Aqua: 3
Turn 9
- Operation: Research: Kuck Mosquito robonaut
- Event: Inspiration
- Starting Aqua: 3
- Net Δ Aqua: -1
- Ending Aqua: 2
Turn 10
- Operation: Free Market: Kuck Mosquito
- Starting Aqua: 2
- Net Δ Aqua: 3
- Ending Aqua: 5
Turn 11
- Operation: Research: Mo/Li Heat Pipe radiatior
- Event: Inspiration
- Notes: This is a better radiator, I can decommission and Free Market the ETHER.
- Starting Aqua: 5
- Net Δ Aqua: 0
- Ending Aqua: 5
Turn 12
- Operation: Free Market: ETHER Charged Dust radiator
- Free Actions: Decommission ETHER Charged Dust radiator.
- Starting Aqua: 5
- Net Δ Aqua: 3
- Ending Aqua: 8
Turn 13
- Operation: Boost: thruster and radiator.
- Event: Glitch.
- Notes: No pad explosion. That's good.
- Starting Aqua: 8
- Net Δ Aqua: -4
- Ending Aqua: 4
Turn 14
- Operation: Free Market: Pulsed Inductive thruster
- Free Actions:
- Cargo Transfer: build the rocket.
- Tankage: 3 Aqua.
- Movement: To the Venus Flyby, belt roll 6 - 3 net thrust and the radiator is decommissioned.
- Notes: Rocket:
- Thruster: Re Solar Moth
- Robonaut: Solar-pumped MHD Exciplex Laser
- Radiator: Mo/Li Heat Pipe
- Dry mass: 4
- Wet mass: 7
- Thrust: 3
Since the radiator is decommissioned from the belt roll failure, this could end up being a very, very long game as I do not have any Budget Cut protection. At a minimum it will take me until the Blue Season to save up enough Aqua to reboost and refuel.
- Starting Aqua: 4
- Net Δ Aqua: 0
- Ending Aqua: 4
Turn 15
- Operation: Research: Rock Splitter robonaut
- Event: Glitch
- Notes: Budget Cut protection
- Starting Aqua: 4
- Net Δ Aqua: -2
- Ending Aqua: 2
Turn 16
- Operation: Income
- Starting Aqua: 2

Turn 22
- Operation: Income
- Notes: Boring.
- Starting Aqua: 8
- Net Δ Aqua: 1
- Ending Aqua: 9
Turn 23
- Operation: Boost
- Free Actions:
- Cargo Transfer: build the rocket.
- Tankage: 3 Aqua.
- Movement: Again to Venus Flyby, belt roll 2 minus 3 = -1, all good for the belt roll. But let's stop at L2 Sol Earth Lagrange to be able to pay FINAO in the Karin Cluster.
- Event: Glitch
- Notes: Rocket as above, need to roll really low for Belt roll.
- Starting Aqua: 9
- Net Δ Aqua: -7
- Ending Aqua: 2
Turn 24
- Operation: Free Market: Rock Splitter robonaut
- Movement: Venus Flyby to hazard space in Karin Cluster, pay FINAO
- Starting Aqua: 2
- Net Δ Aqua: 0
- Ending Aqua: 2
Turn 25
- Operation: Prospect: Karin A busted, Karin B busted.
- Movement: Land on Karin B.
- Event: Inspiration
- Notes: Will need to refuel.
- Starting Aqua: 2
- Net Δ Aqua: 0
- Ending Aqua: 2
Turn 26
- Operation: Site Refuel: +2 Aqua
- Notes: I have a choice here: I can wait 1 more turn and get FINAO, or risk the hazard right now. Since FINAO is only 3, and I have two Aqua in hand, I'll wait the turn. If this was a full 4 Aqua FINAO, I'd have to wait 3 turns, and I'd probably just take the risk.
- Starting Aqua: 2
- Net Δ Aqua: 0
- Ending Aqua: 2
Turn 27
- Operation: Income
- Movement: Take off from Karin B, pay FINAO, move to the pivot before Vesta Family
- Event: Inspiration
- Starting Aqua: 2
- Net Δ Aqua: -2
- Ending Aqua: 0
Turn 28
- Operation: Prospect: Vesta claimed automatically, roll 3 and Eichsfelidia claimed.
- Movement: Burn into Vesta Lagrange.
- Notes: What a bummer failing the radiation roll. I need to make a table to make it easy to assess radiation roll risk.
- Starting Aqua: 0
- Net Δ Aqua: 0
- Ending Aqua: 0
