Loads of light games

I wasn't up for anything really heavy today so we played load of short games today:

  1. Cathedral: I played red this game, and actually won it with a complete placement. CC ended up with a lumpy 5 piece left over.

  2. Pandemic with Virulent Strain. We got almost all the way through the draw deck with black cured, but yellow blew up and we ran out of cubes. Game 8 for me.

  3. Pirateer I won this one by rolling Snake Eyes, and there were only two pieces left on the board.

  4. Pandemic with Mutation. We started this slightly wrong, then probably focused too much on the mutation, and had black blow up right after we cured yellow. We had plenty of draw deck left, there was a good chance we could have cured more if we hadn't run out of cubes for black. This makes game 9 for me.

  5. Zombie Dice, I actually won this game! Final score 13 to 3 my favor. We used the Santa and H&H dice for this game. Game 14.

  6. Zombie Dice with Santa and H&H AND School Bus. I lost this one as usual 13 to 8. Game 15.

  7. 6 Nimmt! I finally win a game of 6 Nimmt! It's been a while. I usually lose. The score here was me 14, CC 45.

  8. Objective 218 I managed to get a lot of 1/2 card combos together, and while I didn't knock out the CP, I did win this one with 8 cards left on the table versus CC's 3 cards. I'm finding there is more game here than I originally thought.

CC usually plays better than he did today, he was off his game a bit. We're usually really evenly matched.

Average plays: 385 / 63 = 6.11

What to play next?

Deciding what to play next is always a tough call when faced with a closet full of games, all of which were purchased with intent to play. Here's one I'm dealing with the decision.

  • Something New: this means both something new to me and a game which has been published recently, within the last two or three years.
  • Something Classic: I've acquired a number of games properly considered "classic" which haven't yet been played. The current example would be PanzerGruppe Guderian.
  • Something Again: mastery requires constant practice, which means playing games many, many times to allow nuance to appear.
  • Something Vietnam: as I'm on a Vietnam binge. I don't have all the Vietnam games ever published, but I can say that I have a lot of them, and probably more than most people.
  • Something Obscure: as it's fun to poke around in the dustier corners of game design.
  • Something Different: break away from the same old publishers and try a game from one of the new kids on the block. Or, conversely, dip into legacy with a classic tried and true.
  • Something Light: once in a while it's nice to actually finish a game all the way through in one sitting, in an hour or two.
  • Something Heavy: if possible, it's nice to set up something big and complicated which can be left out for days or weeks or even months, for a leisurely stroll through a very large or long game.

There are surely many more ways to choose, but the above method keeps me busy enough, helps me get both breadth and depth into my play, and provides me with a sense of progress.

  • Have a solo game ready to play.
  • Keep score or advise on a game in progress.
  • Referee a game in progress.
